As performers on period instruments and with a strong interest in historical performance practice the “Pleyel Quartett Köln” re-examines string quartets of both the classical period and the 19th century and early 2oth centuries.
The large number of composers in the classical era and their wide scope remain just as largely forgotten nowadays, people tending instead to focus on Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven as the main representatives of the time. It is the intention of the “Pleyel Quartett Köln” to rediscover lesser known composers und to place them in context with their more famous colleagues.
The Quartet often works on programmes connecting Pleyel, for instance, with Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Or it crosses the border between the classical and the Romantic period by combining Schubert and Mendelssohn, for instance, with Dvorák and Klughardt, Schumann with Burgmüller. But please contact us with specific programming suggestions, as we can supply themes ranging from childrens' concerts to musicological symposia.
